Strengthening Eye Health in Biliran
The Biliran Provincial Hospital has successfully provided free eye surgery to
18 patients through the iStrength Project Enhancing Eye Health Systems in Eastern Visayas (Region
.
This initiative, supported by CBM Australia,CBM Global, and the Provincial Government of Biliran, aims to improve access to quality eye care, especially for underserved communities.
Over the past two years, the project has focused on:
Training local doctors, clinicians, and barangay health workers
Conducting eye screenings, including a recent caravan with 200 patients screened
Establishing an Eye Health Center in Biliran โ soon to open!
This center will serve as a hub for eye screening, low-vision assessment, and minor surgeries like cataract removal. A strong referral system is also in place โ from Rural Health Units to the Biliran Provincial Hospital, and for complex cases, to Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVRMC).
With local legislation and support in place, the project is poised for long-term sustainability.
