DPWH Biliran Infrastructure Update with Engr. Irwin L. Antonio

DPWH Biliran Infrastructure Update with Engr. Irwin L. Antonio

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Biliran District, under the leadership of District Engineer Engr. Irwin L. Antonio, provided important updates on major bridge projects in the province.

✅ Biliran Bridge Repair

The repair works on the Biliran Bridge have already been satisfactorily completed. To further strengthen the bridge, DPWH—with guidance from the Bureau of Design and regional office—added enhancement works to increase its load rating capacity.

📅 Target completion of the final works is by October or November 2025, ensuring the bridge can safely handle the growing volume of vehicles.

🌉 Plans for a New Biliran Bridge

Good news for Biliranons! A second Biliran Bridge is now in the planning stage and has been prioritized under the National Expenditure Program (NEP). This project is expected to be fully funded, without phasing, through government and possible foreign-assisted funding.

👉 This means that once approved, the entire cost for the new bridge will be released, expediting construction and addressing long-term traffic and transport needs.

Concerns arose on social media after heavy rains caused scouring near the Mother Mary Bridge. Engr. Antonio assured the public that the bridge remains structurally sound and safe for motorists.

The scouring affected only protective works, not the main structure.

Immediate action was taken: water flow was diverted, and the approach at Abutment (abutment – part of a bridge or arch that directly supports the weight and connects it to the ground) B was reinforced.

The bridge, constructed in 2018 under OCD funding, continues to withstand strong weather conditions.

📌 Public Assurance

Engr. Antonio emphasizes that all bridges in Biliran are safe for passage. Ongoing enhancements and long-term projects reflect DPWH’s commitment to public safety and sustainable infrastructure development.
