Accomplishments in food self-sufficiency as a whole lead to the Province of Biliran being the only province in the country to be declared as the Walang Gutom Awardee by the Galing Pook Fundation and the DSWD in Malacanang Palace, Manila last June 26, 2024. With this premise, Biliran’s economic team briefs Governor Dok Roger Espina on the province’s economic landscape, which is largely agricultural in nature, with the new Provincial Agriculturist Brian Sinangote, PPDO Ms. Swanie Enage, LIDEPO Dr. Ryan Teofel Arpon, and special project Balay Biliranon Focal Person Mr. George Plecerda. By far the OPAS supervises a considerable number of food self-sufficiency initiatives under the banner Garden to Table Program: Rice Production, High Value Crops, Vegetable Commercialization, Corn and Root Crops, Fruit Trees Production, Pest Management, Farm Mechanization, Organic Agriculture, Agro-Industry and Fishery programs. The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) under Dr. Suzette Apura also provides strong support in food self-sufficiency thru a robust Livestock Production and Dispersal Program. This is to include the increasing local production of eggs which is geared to decrease our dependence of egg supply from outside the province.
